Statutory History
The Bureau of Audits was established in 1935 to conduct all audits required by the Department of Administration.
- Chapter 35-7 of the Rhode Island General Laws directs the Bureau of Audits to conduct biennial audits of the financial affairs, the economy and efficiency of management, and the books and accounts of all state departments and agencies; to conduct investigations at the request of the Governor or the General Assembly relative to the financial affairs of the state and any state department or agency; and requires the Bureau of Audits to furnish auditors and accountants to other state departments.
- Section 8-15-9 of the Rhode Island General Laws authorizes audits of court-imposed and court-related costs, fines, restitution and other payments, deposits, and receipts of the Judicial Branch of State Government.
- Sections 16-2-21.4, 28-42-51, 36-1-2.1 of the Rhode Island General Laws reference additional statutory responsibilities for the Bureau.
